Our alliance with Virgin Australia gives customers of both airlines easy access to more than 200 flights every week and 60 destinations across Australia and New Zealand.
That means more trans-Tasman flights to choose from, with the convenience of booking everything through one airline. When you book online, the operating airline is clearly identified, so if you want to choose one or the other you can. As you'd expect, there are a few differences in the way each airline operates. Here are the topics people often ask about.
With the Virgin alliance it's easy. For flights between New Zealand and Australia, the baggage allowance of the airline you book through applies, even if a flight is operated by the other airline.
We're making a change to our frequent flyer partnership with Virgin Australia effective 1 November 2017.
Airpoints members will continue to be able to earn and redeem Airpoints Dollars™ on trans-Tasman and domestic Australian Virgin Australia flights, however for bookings from 1 November you will no longer be able to earn Airpoints Dollars on Virgin Australia's long haul services (between Australia and Hong Kong or Los Angeles).
Long Haul bookings on Virgin Australia which are made prior to 1 November 2017 for travel after 1 November 2017, will still earn Airpoints Dollars as displayed in the Partner Airline flights tab of the Airpoints Dollars look up table. Normal booking class limitations will apply.
Airpoints members will continue being able to access their frequent flyer benefits on Trans-Tasman and domestic Australian Virgin Australia flights.
Advance seat request
Seat select is not available for NZ customers on a Virgin Australia operated service. Air New Zealand Airpoints Gold and Elite and Koru members travelling on VA operated services will be allocated priority seating at check in. Just provide your Airpoints number when booking and present your card at check-in.
At the airport, check in with the airline that is operating your flight.
On flights between Australia and New Zealand inflight entertainment is provided:
- On Air New Zealand operated flights through seatback screens
- On Virgin Australia operated flights through a free WiFi app, which you can download to your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android phone or tablet before flying

Travelling with infants and children
On Virgin Australia operated flights, each infant must be accompanied by an adult. On Air New Zealand operated flights two infants are allowed per accompanying adult, provided one infant is ticketed as a child and able to be seated in an approved infant car seat, which the accompanying adult must provide. Where a fare includes a meal, with Air New Zealand operated flights you can request a kid's meal when you book.
Booking for children travelling alone
Children travelling alone can be booked online or through our call centre but can only travel on Air New Zealand operated flights.
