Checked in Baggage

Make the most of checked-in baggage limits by pooling baggage with others in your travelling party. Just ensure you check in together.

Check your free baggage allowance below. Baggage limits vary depending on where you are travelling. The allowances below apply to Air New Zealand operated flights only. If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand codeshare partner, you will need to check your baggage allowance with the other airline.

Individual Free Checked Baggage Allowances

(maximum 25 kg each)

Gold Elite / Gold / Star Gold and Koru Club Members 2 pieces

  • Separately bagged sports equipment counts as one piece
  • In addition to other allowances, baby strollers, car seats, and medical/life equipment are all free as well as a maximum of two wheel chairs

On Air New Zealand the maximum weight for any bag is 32kg (70lbs).

Under this piece system, each piece of baggage should have total dimensions (length + width + height) no greater than 158cm (62").

Infants are entitled to the same baggage allowance as the accompanying passenger, including car seats and strollers, but they are not entitled to any additional allowances linked to the accompanying passengers frequent flyer tier status.

For all flights:

  • Please note that if your itinerary involves Air New Zealand flights where both the 'piece' and 'weight' baggage allowances apply, we will extend the more generous 'piece' allowance to all Air New Zealand flights on that same ticketed itinerary. If your itinerary also involves flights operated by another airline/s, please refer directly to them for their allowance.
  • The maximum weight limit of 32kg (70lbs) for any individual  piece of baggage is an industry standard.  It does not relate to your overall entitlement but is a safety measure to reduce injuries to baggage handling staff.  Any item over 32 kg will require repacking.
  • Each piece of baggage should not exceed total dimensions (length + width + height) of 158cm (62")

Connecting with Other Airlines

If you have a connecting flight with another airline, your baggage may be through-checked if Air New Zealand has an interline agreement with the other airline. Your flights must also all be on the same ticket. If your flights are ticketed separately, baggage may only be through-checked if your tickets are issued in conjunction with each other. Please contact your booking agent if you are unsure whether your baggage may be through-checked.

Unacceptable Items

Air New Zealand advises that the following items should not be included in your checked baggage and Air New Zealand accepts no liability for their damage or loss unless the items are identified and Air New Zealand has in writing accepted them for carriage:

  • Cash or other valuable documents
